he Muheim Heritage House Museum, a Registered National Historic Site, was built by Joseph and Carmelita Muheim beginning in 1898. The first four rooms were completed in 1902. As the family grew, six more rooms were added. The house was completed in 1915. Located at 207 Youngblood Hill, the home is an example of late 19th-century architecture and has been restored to its earlier elegance.
Joseph M. Muheim, Sr., was an early Bisbee entrepreneur who emigrated from Switzerland in 1883. Muheim brewed beer for thirsty miners for about four years before turning to mining investments and real estate. He erected the Muheim Block on Brewery Gulch, which housed the Brewery Bar, a stock exchange and the Edelweis Restaurant. Later he and several other prominent Bisbee businessmen founded the Miners & Merchants bank (7 Main Street).
The Muheim Heritage House served as a private residence until 1975 when it was donated to the City of Bisbee. The house was restored by the Bisbee Council on the Arts & Humanities and opened as a museum in 1980.
Visitors to the house will enjoy the guided tour through the restored interior with its period furnishings. This lovely pioneer home, situated on a hill overlooking Old Bisbee, offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and hillside homes on Brewery Gulch.
The House is available for special events such as small weddings, receptions, and other intimate gatherings. Contact the Bisbee Council on the Arts & Humanities staff at (520) 432-7071 for additional information and we will be glad to help you arrange your special event.
